How the best vegan mayonnaise taste test worked
Five members of the olive team conducted a blind taste test to find the best shop-bought vegan mayonnaise. We tasted all of the biggest vegan mayonnaise brands widely available in the UK. The group chose an overall winner and a runner-up.
Overall winner: Sacla’ Free From Mayonnaise
About the vegan mayonnaise: Sacla’ free from mayonnaise is made without dairy, egg and gluten. The ingredients include carrot and apple concentrate as well as wine vinegar and potato protein.
Comments: This dairy, egg and gluten free mayonnaise was our overall winner with a creamy, silky smooth texture, nutty flavour and well-balanced acidity. It looks like real mayo and we don't think people would be able to tell the difference.
Price: £2.29/180g, ocado.com
Runner-up: Original Vegenaise Mayonnaise
About the vegan mayonnaise: This vegan mayonnaise is made using rapeseed oil, brown rice syrup, apple cider vinegar and soya protein. It is egg, wheat and gluten free.
Comments: Although this vegan mayonnaise had a jellified and slightly thick texture, the flavour was familiar of a regular mayonnaise, with vinegary and earthy notes.
Price: £3.39/340g, ocado.com
Other vegan mayonnaises we tried
Biona Organic Egg Free Mayonnaise
About the vegan mayonnaise: Biona vegan mayonnaise is free from lactose and soya. The ingredients include apple vinegar, agave syrup, fennel and xantham gum.
Comments: This vegan mayonnaise did not resemble a mayonnaise, instead was similar to a thick vinaigrette. It was grey in appearance and had a congealed texture and was a bit bland.
Price: £2.49/230g, ocado.com
Rubies in the Rubble Aquafaba Mayo
About the vegan mayonnaise: This vegan mayonnaise is gluten free and has no added sugar. It is made using aquafaba as well as white wine vinegar and potato starch.
Comments: Although this vegan mayonnaise had a similar appearance to regular mayonnaise, it had a very sharp flavour and a fishy aftertaste.
Price: £2.99/210g, ocado.com
Mr Organic Egg Free and Organic Mayo
About the vegan mayonnaise: Mr Organic mayonnaise is dairy, egg and gluten free. The ingredients include apple vinegar, soy flour, maize starch and cane sugar.
Comments: This vegan mayonnaise had a noticeably fruity flavour with a slightly musty taste. It was grey and lumpy in appearance.
Price: £2.40/180g, ocado.com
Granovita Mayola Egg and Dairy Free Mayonnaise
About the vegan mayonnaise: This vegan mayonnaise is a blend of sunflower oil, flaxseed oil and apple extract. It is free from dairy and eggs.
Comments: We thought this vegan mayonnaise was quite similar to salad cream with a smooth texture, however it had an artificial flavour.
