Where does the Sex on the beach cocktail come from?
The exact origins of this classic vodka drink are unknown, but it rose to popularity in the 1980s-90s. It is rumoured that a bartender in Florida invented the drink in 1987 in order to promote peach schnapps. Its provocative and memorable name encapsulated the spirit of the spring break, in order to stand out to young beachgoers. However, contrary to this theory, 'Sex on the beach' was also thought to already be included in the 1982 American Bartenders School Guide to Drinks.
Either way, the rich and fruity notes of this refreshing cocktail soon skyrocketed it to fame across the world. Although its popularity started dwindling from the 2000s, this tropical tipple nevertheless remains a solid staple on many cocktail menus nationwide. Our recipe shows you how to mix up your own in just a matter of minutes, so you can capture that beach feeling at home.
