Why we love strawberries
Strawberries are well-loved all round the world for their vibrant red colour and sweet, juicy flavour. Actually a member of the rose family, there are more than 10 species – all differ in flavour, size and texture. However, they all have the same characteristic shape and seeded flesh. When they're in season, we eat strawberries at every opportunity – blitzed into breakfast smoothies, blended into cocktails and baked into cakes.
Health benefits of strawberries
Strawberries are sweet but low in calories, making them a good healthy choice. They're packed with anthocyanidins, colourful pigments which are thought to prevent inflammatory conditions and heart disease. They also include heart-friendly nutrients potassium, folate and vitamin C. Eating strawberries appears to slow down our digestion of glucose, especially when eaten with carbohydrates. About seven fresh berries count as one of your five-a-day.
How to freeze strawberries
- Wash the strawberries in cold water and pat dry with kitchen roll.
- Cut and discard the stems, then freeze whole or cut to a smaller size if you wish.
- Spread out the strawberries on a tray and place in the freezer until solid.
- Once frozen, transfer them to a labelled resealable freezer bag, making sure to remove any excess air.
- Frozen strawberries are best consumed within six months. You can defrost them by transferring to the fridge so that they thaw slower.
When are strawberries in season
British strawberry season runs from June to September, so plenty of time to make the most of them.
