Birch, Southville, Bristol: quick restaurant review
A quick review of Birch restaurant in Bristol, which among other things makes its own butter and sourdough bread. Written by Elly Curshen, owner of Pear Café in Bristol.
Birch is pretty much my perfect place to eat. It is owned and run by Sam Leach and Beccy Massey: Sam cooks; Beccy runs front of house. The interior is bright and basic, and the service is friendly, relaxed and incredibly efficient.
Sam’s menu is short, simple and seasonal. This summer, they served delicious asparagus with cider butter and hazelnuts. They make their own butter and sourdough bread, and grow lots on the menu in their allotment. Average spend without wine is £50. (birchbristol.co.uk)
Bullseye: Chilli beef sausage on brioche with cheese, jalapeños and ‘pommes’ (chips).
Misfire: The relentless attempts to prove Germans are funny. Sausage and salad, for instance, is in the ‘No carbs fräulein’ section.
