Ninja Blast portable cordless blender

Best portable blender

Star rating: 5/5

This portable blender is a joy to look at and to use. It comes in a range of attractive colours including Cranberry, Denim Blue and Forest Green with a sip lid and handle making it easy to take on the go. There are more features than in some other portable blenders we tested, like an LED light which flashes different colours to indicate different messages, such as the vessel and base not being aligned properly.

You also don't need to hold the button down for blending — when you press the on button it starts a 30 second blending cycle which offered a super-smooth consistency to our drink.

KitchenAid GO cordless blender

Best blowout portable blender

Star rating: 4.5/5

This portable blender is part of KitchenAid's cordless GO range, which uses one battery that can be moved used on different appliances within the range. It's an innovative piece of technology that we really like, and means you only need to worry about charging one battery, but it does make this by far the priciest portable blender in this list.

With a sleek look and attractive matte black finish this model impressed us as soon as we took it out of the box. A slightly bulkier model this would be less suited to carrying with you on the go but would be excellent for versatile use around the house. We were impressed with how powerful this was for a portable blender and our smoothie was blended very well without many seeds.

Cuisinart cordless on the go blender

Best sleek portable blender

Star rating: 4.5/5

From Cuisinart, this portable blender has a silver finish and a sleek cup design that tapers at one end. It's slightly larger than some of the other portable models that we tested, but would be brilliant for using in different areas of the kitchen or if you're hosting in your garden making pizzas or barbecuing.

When making a smoothie we would recommend adding some liquid to the cup before adding your frozen fruit and some more liquid as we found this the most effective for blending. We found that if we added the fruit first it got stuck furthest from the blades and it was tricky to get everything smooth.

Nutribullet Portable Blender

Best colourful portable blender

Star rating: 4/5

Nutribullet's Portable Blender is simple to set up - charge via your laptop or a USB plug (not supplied) and the base unit is ready to whizz ingredients once you’ve screwed the 385ml capacity container on top.

There’s only one speed setting, and we found it worked well on frozen berry mixtures, protein shakes and baby purées. We struggled with fibrous, heavier mixes though, so not the best for heavy-duty smoothies.

Coming in a range of colours, this makes a great gift for gym bunnies, new parents or healthy people on the go. It’s also an option for kitchen use as it takes up next to no space in the cupboard and can be used for blending small batches of sauce and simple salad dressings.

Best compact portable blender

Star rating: 4/5

Nutribullet might be the best known brand name in the world of smoothie makers and this model is its answer to a portable blender. This blender is compact and lightweight with a 370ml cup which is the right amount for making a single serving of smoothie.

The low wattage takes a little while to get going compared to fixed blender models we've tested, but overall we were impressed by the power produced by this pocket-sized blender. Once we'd added a little more liquid the final result had few lumps and was easy to transport in the cup with the lid attachment.

Laura Ashley portable blender

Best cute portable blender

Star rating: 3.5/5

Laura Ashley appliances are pretty unique when it comes to the design. They are decorated in the brand's well-known blue floral pattern on a white backdrop. Whether you have the complete set or are looking for an appliance to stand out from the crowd this would look perfect in a cottagecore kitchen. With a super compact footprint and a 450ml jug, this smoothie maker is small enough to be easy to store. It comes with a USB charging cable and a display that shows how much charge there is.

Unfortunately, this blender lacked the power we found in other models and struggled to incorporate the frozen fruit in our smoothie. As there isn't an indication for maximum amounts on the jug we found it a bit tricky to judge, but we found on test that it worked best with less frozen fruit that usual and more liquid to make sure that it was all well incorporated. Once we mastered this we found our drink was smooth without any discernible seeds or blueberry skins.

Is it worth getting a portable blender?

Whether a portable blender is right for you depends on what you plan on using it for. Portable blenders are cordless, so can be really useful if you have a limited number of kitchen outlets or want to roam a bit further afield with your cooking whether that's barbecuing in the garden or making cocktails on the beach.

Portable blenders can also be useful if you're someone who is busy and often on the go, but likes to be able to carry everything you need to make a healthy snack with you. Since these blenders are perfect for smoothies, if you like to head straight from the gym to the office, a portable blender could be a great option to make your breakfast.

Can you put frozen fruit in a portable blender?

You can definitely put frozen fruit into a portable blender. However, as portable blenders have a far lower power wattage than their larger counterparts which means you need to be slightly careful about how much frozen fruit you put in.

In terms of ratio we'd recommend putting about twice as much liquid as your frozen fruit to make sure it blends properly.
