Our bodies need protein to function. It plays a crucial role in building and repairing cells, helps to create enzymes which digest our food and supports the immune system which helps us fight off viruses and bacteria. It also helps build muscle, keeps us full and energised, and supports our bodies through exercise.

If you don't eat animal foods like meat, fish, dairy and eggs, it can be difficult to make sure you are hitting your protein needs.

To ensure you're getting enough, consider investing in a vegan protein powder. These have been specially formulated for a plant-based diet and will get you closer to your daily protein quota. Just make sure that you continue to eat a varied and balanced diet which includes tofu, nuts, beans and pulses – all great sources of plant-based protein – instead of relying solely on the powder. You'll get plenty of other important nutrients from these whole foods, including fibre which supports gut health.

WelleCo Nourishing Protein

best vegan protein powder

Best pea protein powder

Star rating: 5/5

We were genuinely impressed with the quality of this powder, made from a blend of pea and rice protein. The texture is silky and smooth when mixed with water, making this easily sippable as it is, no need to blend into a smoothie.

One big pro for testers was the addition of pre- and probiotics, turmeric, açai powder and psyllium which combine to support energy levels and good gut health.

We tested the chocolate which is now sold out but there are other flavours available.

Available from:
WelleCo (£29/300g)
Cult Beauty (£29/300g)

Best hemp protein powder

Star rating: 4.5/5

There are a lot of extra benefits to this vegan protein powder. Created with women in mind, it contains maca for hormone balance, B vitamins for hair and nails, as well as magnesium, iron, calcium which support mood and energy. It also contains 20g protein per 30g serving.

The flavour is rich and chocolatey, without being too artificial or leaving a cloying aftertaste.

Protein Works Vegan Wondershake

best vegan protein powder

Best overall vegan protein powder

Star rating: 4.5/5

This vegan protein powder really stood out to our testers for quality, texture and taste. It becomes like a thick milkshake when mixed with water and doesn't taste too sweet, despite using the sweetener sucralose.

It contains an impressive 20g protein per 25g serving and comes in at 94kcals. It's also a great keto option.

We tested the chocolate bueno which is now sold out, but other flavours in the range scored highly, too.

MyVegan Plant Protein Superblend Caramel

MyVegan Plant Protein Superblend Caramel

Best flavour vegan protein powder

Star rating: 4/5

If you've got a bit of a sweet tooth, this protein shake is for you. It has a strong caramel flavour that feels decadent, but with 21g protein per 28g serving, this is more than just a treat. Testers noted the easily digestible type of protein used and felt this offers a lot for the fairly low price.

Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Coffee Coconut & MCTs

Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Coffee Coconut & MCTs

Best for fitness fanatics

This high-quality pea protein contains 9 essential amino acids and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) – a type of supplement popular among athletes and bodybuilders. As well as being keto-friendly, it provides 18g per 25g serving.

We tried the flavour Coffee Coconut & MCTs which is more coconut than coffee but we found the combination a winner.
