And you’ll be pleased to hear that extensive list of cities covers some of the most varied food cultures in the world. Here are just four that you absolutely won’t want to miss…
Lisbon
With countless eateries offering everything from small plate street food to Michelin-starred meals, Lisbon’s dining scene is often described as one of the best in Europe. A visit to a traditional Portuguese tavern is a must, but the sheer volume of choice can be overwhelming. Luckily, A Primavera Do Jerónimo has everything you could want from an authentic local eatery, from soupy rice dishes to fresh seafood. Just make sure you book ahead, as it’s small and very popular.
If you want to sample more local delicacies, you could head to Lisbon institution Bonjardim, also known as ‘King of Chickens’, to try its famous piri piri chicken. Or pop into the small but bustling Manteigaria, home to some of the finest pastéis de nata in the city. But whatever you do, don’t miss the Time Out Market, where you’ll find some of Lisbon’s best chefs selling small, reasonably priced plates of their top dishes, alongside local wines and fresh lemonade, in a 19th-century market hall.
TUI city breaks to Lisbon include stays at the 4* Heritage Avenida Liberdade or the 4* As Janelas Verdes. Head to TUI Collection Experiences to discover some of the city’s best foodie excursions, such as the Portuguese history and flavours food tour.
Paris
Unsurprisingly, Parisian food is just as elegant as the City of Love itself. If you want to try a classic French bistro, Le Pantruche is the perfect choice, with its banquette seating, crisp white napkins and deftly executed dishes, including fillet steak, scallops and its famous Grand Marnier soufflé. After dinner, if you’re in the mood for a drink, you need to try The Little Red Door. Deceptively unassuming from the outside, it offers a regularly changing menu of creative, inventively presented cocktails in a cosy, low-lit setting.
During the day, you’ll probably want to visit one of Paris’ famous coffee shops. KB CaféShop is known for its high-quality coffee, which is sourced from all over the world and roasted in-house, while Café Méricourt serves speciality coffee, alongside a delicious all-day brunch menu, featuring shakshuka, vegetarian congee and green eggs with feta. But if you simply fancy a proper French croissant, bakeries such as La Maison d’Isabelle and Du Pain et des Idées are your best bet.
TUI city breaks to Paris include stays at the 4* The Original Boutique, Maison Montmartre, Paris or the 3* Lorette Astotel. Head to TUI Collection Experiences to discover some of the city’s best foodie excursions, such as the French pastries and market tasting tour around the Eiffel Tower.
Rome
Loved all over the world, Italy’s cuisine is known for its simple ingredients and bold flavours – and Rome is no exception. If you’re there for the pizza, make sure you drop by Panificio Bonci, a small Roman bakery where you can sample a huge range of mouth-watering pizza al taglio slices. For pasta, Piatto Romano is a wonderful trattoria featuring all the classics, from carbonara to amatriciana. Or you could sign up for a pasta lesson at The Pasta Factory and make your own!
When you’ve had your fill of pizza and pasta, carciofi alla giudia (deep-fried artichokes) is another popular Roman dish, and Ristorante Piperno has some of the best. Tucked down a small street in the city’s Jewish quarter, it serves perfectly balanced plates of meltingly soft artichoke hearts with crisp leaves. Alternatively, if you’re ever looking for a quick snack, Supplizio offers a delectable rendition of the original tomato supplì, a popular Roman street food consisting of mozzarella-filled fried rice balls.
TUI city breaks to Rome include stays at the 3* Alessandrino or the 4* Pulitzer Roma. Head to TUI Collection Experiences to discover some of the city’s best foodie activities, including a pizza cooking class with a local chef.
New York City
NYC boasts one of the most diverse culinary scenes in the world, so there are an endless number of culinary delights to choose from. If you’re a seafood lover, you could try a plate of fresh oysters and clams from the Grand Central Oyster Bar, located in the lower level of the historic train station. Or if pasta is more your thing, you could sample a bowl of silky cacio e pepe from Via Carota, a traditional Italian trattoria in the West Village.
Of course, there are a few foods that everyone associates with the Big Apple – and you won’t want to miss an opportunity to try them. For the quintessential New York pizza, it has to be Joe’s Pizza in Greenwich Village, which serves those XL slices you’ll no doubt have seen in films or TV series. With a few locations dotted around Manhattan, Jewish deli Russ & Daughters offers classic pumpernickel bagels packed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, while just south of SoHo, Eileen’s Special Cheesecake is a must for a slice of handmade fluffy cheesecake.
TUI city breaks to New York City include stays at the 4* Riu Plaza New York Times Square or the 3* Plus Hilton Garden Inn Chelsea. Head to TUI Collection Experiences to discover some of the city’s best foodie excursions, including a food tour of the West Village.
