As a lifestyle and health writer, I’ve tried and tested my fair share of wellness retreats and spas over the years, from Wim Hof style breathwork classes in tipis in the Cheshire countryside, to wine spas in Bordeaux. In fact, I already have my next one booked for May in the mountains of Mallorca, centred around female-focused strength training.

And it’s not just me that has the bug for retreats, the wellness tourism industry has grown exponentially and is now worth a staggering $814billion, and set to reach almost $2trillion by 2027 according to the Global Wellness Institute. In fact, in their The Future of Wellness Tourism 2025 report, global marketing agency FINN Partners said we’re entering ‘the golden age of wellness tourism’ as more than ever before we are focused on longevity and appreciation of our health.

However, where health retreats were once categorised as either spa getaways or hardcore detoxes complete with colon cleanses, has now made way for a multitude of wellness experiences for every health concern. Whether you’re wanting to overhaul your gut health, learn how to sleep better, or be at one with nature, there are retreats for just about everything.

Here are my picks of the 10 wellness retreats you need to have on your radar for 2025.

QUINTA-CARVALHAS-retreat-portugal (1) copy

Best wellness retreat for animal lovers

Equine assisted therapy uses the therapeutic power of horses to promote human physical and mental health. During this, the connection between humans and horses is not through riding, but through touch, matching breath and energy. Fellow writer Georgina Fuller told me about her retreat to Quinta Carvalhas in Portugal, an incredible experience for her as a horse lover. Designed to help with issues like anxiety, trauma and stress, equine therapy helps guests build trust, communication skills and emotional regulation through animal interactions. This retreat is set in the Portuguese countryside, surrounded by lush landscapes, and home to the retreat’s herd of Lusitano horses. Yoga, reiki and massage is also on offer.
